The literal translation of “Bal Sansad” is Children/Student (“Bal”) and Assembly/Parliament (“Sansad”). Therefore it is also sometimes referred to as student’s council.

It functions as an elected body within government schools across various parts in India. The collective body works on identifying issues, proposing solutions, and driving impactful changes within the school.

It functions as the democratic voice of the entire student body, inspiring them to work towards the betterment of their school with limited resources and high aspirations.

Making active citizens

Bal Sansad was conceived with the dual purpose of educating children about India’s political system and enabling their active participation in matters related to their lives, particularly in relation to their education and school. By providing opportunities for children to articulate their needs, learn about their rights, and understand their responsibilities, Bal Sansad prepares them for adulthood as conscious and active citizens.

Conceptualized in the 1990s it aimed to redefine the nature of rural schools in India. Emphasizing participation as a primary goal, a unique system was developed for schools based on the philosophy that everyone has something relevant to contribute in teaching.

Later in 2001, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan integrated this idea and made it compulsory in every primary and middle school in India. This marked a significant shift in focusing on students’ active participation in school, emphasizing their role in finding solutions to their problems and basic needs.

Introducing democracy at the early age

The objectives of Bal Sansad are rooted in a deep respect for children’s opinions and capabilities. This innovative concept allows students to actively participate in the governance of their schools through a democratic process that transcends gender, caste, creed or economic disparities.
