From tribal roots to a fashion icon: Jharkhand model redefines beauty standards

Anjel Mareena Tirkey from Jharkhand has broken the societal norms of her conservative Oraon tribal community to realise her dream of pursuing a career in the modelling and entertainment industry.

Ranchi, Jharkhand

Defying conventions, Anjel Mareena Tirkey, a dusky 25-year-old tribal girl from Namkum in Ranchi district, Jharkhand, makes a mark in the fashion world, redefining the meaning of beauty. Here’s her story – in her own words.

I grew up in the quiet town of Namkum, where the rhythm of daily life resonates with the traditions of the Oraon tribal community.

Growing up in a very conservative environment, the dreams I harboured were often met with skepticism.

Among the people of my community who seldom ventured beyond the familiar, my dreams of pursuing a career in modelling and the entertainment industry seemed like a distant fantasy.

However, there was something within me. A spark!

St. Xavier’s College in Ranchi – where I joined for my graduate studies – became not just an educational institution but a sanctuary where my dreams were nurtured.

The knowledge I gained there became the stepping stone to a world beyond the boundaries of my small town. It was there that I found the strength to challenge societal norms and embrace the uniqueness of my Adivasi features.

In a world where Adivasi features weren’t typically considered beauty standards, I embarked on a path, challenging conventions, to redefine the meaning of success.

The journey was far from easy.

Society’s conventional beauty standards didn’t align with the dusky hue of my skin or the distinct features that marked my tribal identity.

But my family, my pillar of strength, stood by me. Their unwavering support provided the courage I needed to persevere, to hone my skills and to emerge as a model, challenging the preconceived notions of beauty.

The turning point came with the North East Icon Season 6 title in 2019.

Winning this title was not just a personal victory. It was a triumph over the biases that sought to confine my dreams.

The accolade not only boosted my confidence but also marked a shift in the way society perceives beauty.

I became a symbol of change, challenging stereotypes and paving the way for a more inclusive definition of beauty in India.

As I stood on the international stage after winning the prestigious Queen of International Tourism 2023 title at Manila in the Philippines, I realised that my journey was no longer just about me.

After returning to Jharkhand, I realised that it was my responsibility to inspire others to dare to dream.

My story is not just about breaking into the world of fashion and entertainment; it’s about shattering barriers, defying societal expectations and redefining beauty. It’s about the strength derived from my roots.

I’m proof that beauty is not defined by society; it’s the courage to pursue one’s dreams against all odds.

With the support of all those who believed in me, I have shown the world that beauty has no limits.
